A journey from uncertainty to stability Every person who comes through Barnabus’ doors has a unique story. Lily and Peter’s journey shows the impact of timely support and compassion at moments of real crisis. We first met Lily and Peter several years ago after they were granted refugee status. While this was a major step forward, it also brought sudden instability. As they were no longer eligible to remain in Home Office accommodation, they quickly found themselves facing homelessness, unsure where they would sleep from one night to the next. We see many people who have become homeless after being granted refugee status. From receiving refugee status and a legal right to remain in the UK, they have just 42 days to find an income and accommodation before they are evicted from their home office accommodation. For people who often face language barriers and have no experience with the systems in this country, some find it too difficult and as a result, they become homeless. This has been a growing problem since 2018/19 the number of refugee households experiencing homelessness has increased sevenfold. At the time, Lily was pregnant and the couple were unfamiliar with the UK housing system. The uncertainty took a heavy emotional toll on them both. The stress of not knowing how to access support, combined with the fear of bringing a baby into an unstable situation, left them feeling overwhelmed and isolated. Without the right guidance, they were unable to secure emergency accommodation and had nowhere to turn. Thankfully, they came to Barnabus. Our casework team stepped in to advocate on their behalf with the local council, helping them navigate a system they did not yet understand. They were placed into temporary accommodation before eventually moving into their own private rented flat. Alongside this, we supported them with essential documents, managing bills and preparing for the arrival of their baby, helping to ease some of the pressure during an incredibly difficult time. As their circumstances gradually stabilised, Lily and Peter no longer needed urgent support and we were pleased to see them move forward into their own home. A few years later, they got back in touch with Barnabus. It was a heartfelt reunion for our team and a powerful reminder of the journey they had started with us years before. We were overjoyed to hear that they now have two children. Peter is working and studying and together they have built a stable and hopeful future for their family. Their decision to return reflects the trust and connection built through their journey with us. Stories like Lily and Peter’s highlight how the right support at the right time can not only change practical circumstances, but also restore hope during some of life’s most overwhelming moments. We are proud to have played a part in their journey, made possible through the generosity of our supporters.
