PARTNERING WITH LOCAL CHURCHES TO HELP PEOPLE LEAVE HOMELESSNESS BEHIND FOR GOOD

Here at Barnabus, everything we do is led by our faith – whether that’s providing a warm meal to someone in need or referring services for long-term support. We want to share God’s love with anyone experiencing difficulties.

That’s why we launched our church partnership programme, the Dwell Project. It brings the gospel to those without a home, in temporary accommodation, or at risk of homelessness. We offer spiritual support and guidance to help the healing process.

13 In your unfailing love you will lead the people you have redeemed. In your strength you will guide them to your holy dwelling.

14 The nations will hear and tremble; anguish will grip the people of Philistia.

15 The chiefs of Edom will be terrified, the leaders of Moab will be seized with trembling, the people of Canaan will melt away; terror and dread will fall on them.

16 By the power of your arm they will be as still as a stone—until your people pass by, Lord, until the people you bought pass by.

17 You will bring them in and plant them on the mountain of your inheritance—the place, Lord, you made for your dwelling, the sanctuary, Lord, your hands established.

Exodus 15:13-17

BELIEVER OR NON-BELIEVER

WE’RE HERE TO SUPPORT YOU

We’re committed to the physical and spiritual wellbeing of those we support. Bringing together church members from across the country, we hope to provide a safe space for people to pray and feel God’s love. At our support centre, our volunteers and staff host a variety of different sessions – from weekly prayer and worship to discovery courses.

THE POWER OF PRAYER

We believe in the transformational power of prayer to bring healing, salvation, freedom, and hope to our friends experiencing homelessness. To that end our staff and volunteers pray every morning and before each of our activities.

We also have a prayer space in the basement of the Beacon that is available for anyone from a local church to come in and use to pray. Its a 'boiler room' type prayer space that we'd love to see being used all the times we are open.

If you are interested in coming in to pray then simply drop Angela an email and we can arrange it: [email protected]

THE LIGHT SESSION

Our Light sessions provide a safe space for anyone seeking healing through prayer, conversation, and support. We invite leaders from all sorts of different churches to come in and lead these weekly sessions.

OUTREACH

We take small teams out to the accommodation settings around the city to offer prayer and reflection sessions to the residents. This is simply making space for people to come be listened to have a chat and if they want to they can get prayer. If you are interested simply email [email protected].

GET INVOLVED

We couldn’t share the love of God without the support of our partner churches. If you’d like to support us, by volunteering at our prayer and worship sessions, fundraising, or providing practical donations. We’re always grateful for your time and help.

    Starting From Scratch

Stanley has been accessing Barnabus’ services at our Beacon support centre since September 2024. Prior to this, he had experienced six years of rough sleeping in Manchester, with only intermittent periods of sofa surfing between friends and family. His homelessness began following a relationship breakdown and over time he developed a significant dependency on alcohol, which further impacted his physical health and stability.

A journey from uncertainty to stability

We first met Lily and Peter several years ago after they were granted refugee status. While this was a major step forward, it also brought sudden instability. As they were no longer eligible to remain in Home Office accommodation, they quickly found themselves facing homelessness, unsure where they would sleep from one night to the next.

The word has gotten out that I am leaving, some ask with sadness, then others just want to wish me well. Our support workers are here to listen to those who need it. We put together a personalised support plan for every person we help. It could involve finding a safe space or new home, reconnecting with family, or even working a steady job with a corporate partner. We also make vital referrals to detox and rehabilitation projects, or debt intervention services. And we do it all from our Support Centre, Monday to Friday, 10am to 1pm.

  • Homelessness in Manchester

If you’ve walked the streets of Manchester, you’ve almost certainly passed by a rough sleeper. In fact, you’ve probably noticed that there are more people living and sleeping out on the streets. In 2010, the official rough sleeper figure was 7. In 2018, it was 94. Unfortunately, we know that in reality, the number is much higher. Please read on to find out more about homelessness in our city.

  • How we're helping

The stress and anxiety people can suffer when they are homeless means they often feel afraid to reach out and taking that small step towards getting help can seem like a mammoth task. That’s why our team is there to help from the start, giving tailored support and advice every single step of the way.

What would make someone choose to sleep on the floor next to their bed rather than in it? Some of the people we support struggle so deeply with trauma that even when they have a home they find themselves struggling or completely unable to sleep in the bed, instead they choose to sleep on the floor, on their sofas or sometimes even spending nights back on the streets.
