I KNOW SOMEONE THAT'S HOMELESS

HELP SOMEONE OUT OF HOMELESSNESS AND INTO A NEW LIFE

If you know someone who’s homeless, or see someone sleeping on Manchester’s streets, please encourage them to contact the council for support and to visit us. Our Support Centre is open Monday to Thursday for a warm meal, shower, fresh clothing and one-to-one support. We can even help them find a new home.

Manchester City Council asks people to register via this portal, once the form is submitted a housing officer will contact you to help you.

On the Council website you can find also advice on

  • how to solve problems affecting your housing situation

  • what to do if you have been asked to leave your property

  • how you can find somewhere else to live

  • how the council can help you.

If you are seriously concerned for the health or wellbeing of someone please ring them an ambulance.

Alternatively, using this link: https://thestreetlink.org.uk/location you can report the location of someone who is rough sleeping.

UNDER 25?

If they are 25 or under please ask them to contact the Centrepoint national helpline for advice Mon-Fri 9am-5pm by freephone 0808 800 0661, webform or live chat on their website, or you can Whatsapp them on 07557 255 965.

Find more information here. Only if they are over 25.

    Starting From Scratch

Stanley has been accessing Barnabus’ services at our Beacon support centre since September 2024. Prior to this, he had experienced six years of rough sleeping in Manchester, with only intermittent periods of sofa surfing between friends and family. His homelessness began following a relationship breakdown and over time he developed a significant dependency on alcohol, which further impacted his physical health and stability.

A journey from uncertainty to stability

We first met Lily and Peter several years ago after they were granted refugee status. While this was a major step forward, it also brought sudden instability. As they were no longer eligible to remain in Home Office accommodation, they quickly found themselves facing homelessness, unsure where they would sleep from one night to the next.

  • Homelessness in Manchester

If you’ve walked the streets of Manchester, you’ve almost certainly passed by a rough sleeper. In fact, you’ve probably noticed that there are more people living and sleeping out on the streets. In 2010, the official rough sleeper figure was 7. In 2018, it was 94. Unfortunately, we know that in reality, the number is much higher. Please read on to find out more about homelessness in our city.

  • How we're helping

The stress and anxiety people can suffer when they are homeless means they often feel afraid to reach out and taking that small step towards getting help can seem like a mammoth task. That’s why our team is there to help from the start, giving tailored support and advice every single step of the way.

What would make someone choose to sleep on the floor next to their bed rather than in it?

What would make someone choose to sleep on the floor next to their bed rather than in it? Some of the people we support struggle so deeply with trauma that even when they have a home they find themselves struggling or completely unable to sleep in the bed, instead they choose to sleep on the floor, on their sofas or sometimes even spending nights back on the streets.
