Volunteer with us

HELP US REBUILD LIVES

Our wonderful volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. They generously give their time, compassion, and talents to make a difference to those at risk of homelessness or living on Manchester’s streets.

WHAT DOES VOLUNTEERING INVOLVE?

Our support workers dedicate their efforts to making vital service referrals and helping people move into a new life. But this is only possible with your help. Volunteers welcome guests to our drop-in centre, serve food and drink and ensure access to clean clothes and showers. We also need volunteers for some of our other projects including supporting our Housing Project and our Dwell Project.

We consider our volunteers to be an integral part of our team. We aim to ensure that you benefit from ongoing training and development, as well as providing the opportunity to build friendships and community with fellow volunteers and staff through various events during the year.

ABOUT YOU

If you’re over the age of 18 and passionate about helping those in need, we’d love to hear from you. We welcome all skills and backgrounds – we only ask that you’re sympathetic to our values and respectful to our faith.

Having a criminal record is often not a barrier to volunteering at Barnabus - we will look at each case individually. Please let us know if you want to discuss this before you apply.

If you want to talk to us about any issues before you decide to apply, please contact Alex for a chat by emailing [email protected].

Barnabus is a Christian charity, but you do not need to be a Christian to volunteer with us. We do ask though that you are sympathetic to our Christian values and respectful of our faith. If you are interested in volunteering within one of our Christian-specific roles, please email [email protected].

Support Centre Volunteers

Last year, we saw over 740 people in our support centre. Our volunteers play a crucial role in helping us get people off the streets. From serving a warm breakfast and a brew to giving out clothes after a refreshing shower, you can make a difference to somebody’s day and help them engage with us, on their journey off the streets.

Housing Project Volunteers

In our Housing Programme, we have 12 people in our own supported accommodation, as well helping 24 other people who are in their own tenancies. All of these individuals are experiencing their own journey away from the streets to ultimately succeed at independent living. We need people like you to volunteer and help us as we support these men and women on that journey. You will help them to adjust to living independently and to learn to manage their own tenancies.

Dwell Project Volunteers

The Dwell Project brings the gospel to those without a home, in temporary accommodation, or at risk of homelessness. We offer spiritual support and guidance to help the healing process.

    Starting From Scratch

Stanley has been accessing Barnabus’ services at our Beacon support centre since September 2024. Prior to this, he had experienced six years of rough sleeping in Manchester, with only intermittent periods of sofa surfing between friends and family. His homelessness began following a relationship breakdown and over time he developed a significant dependency on alcohol, which further impacted his physical health and stability.

Double Your Impact - This Week Only

This week you can double your support for people experiencing homelessness. Help us raise £20,000 to fund our frontline services for people trying to escape life on the streets.

A journey from uncertainty to stability

We first met Lily and Peter several years ago after they were granted refugee status. While this was a major step forward, it also brought sudden instability. As they were no longer eligible to remain in Home Office accommodation, they quickly found themselves facing homelessness, unsure where they would sleep from one night to the next.

Could you give up your usual comforts for just one night? Join us for Manchester's biggest home sleep out! On Friday 17th July, come together with people from across Manchester for The Big Manc Sleep Out and raise vital funds for people experiencing homelessness.

  • Homelessness in Manchester

If you’ve walked the streets of Manchester, you’ve almost certainly passed by a rough sleeper. In fact, you’ve probably noticed that there are more people living and sleeping out on the streets. In 2010, the official rough sleeper figure was 7. In 2018, it was 94. Unfortunately, we know that in reality, the number is much higher. Please read on to find out more about homelessness in our city.
