Our support workers dedicate their efforts to making vital service referrals and helping people move into a new life. But this is only possible with your help. Volunteers welcome guests to our drop-in centre, serve food and drink, and ensure access to clean clothes and showers.

We consider our volunteers to be an integral part of our team. We aim to ensure that you benefit from ongoing training and development, as well as providing the opportunity to build friendships and community with fellow volunteers and staff through various events during the year.

OUR VOLUNTEERING ROLES

Most of our volunteering takes place on Monday to Thursday between 7am to 8.45am or 8.45am to 12.30pm. Check out some of our roles in more detail below:

Early Morning Outreach Volunteer 07:00am - 8:30am

Our early morning outreach session runs in conjunction with our rough sleeper breakfast session. The outreach team goes out to local streets looking for those who have slept rough overnight. If appropriate they will approach them to check on their welfare and to invite them back to the Beacon, where they can warm up inside, have breakfast and a chat, and link in with our other services.

Rough Sleeper Breakfast Session Volunteer 07:00am - 08:45am

Our guests arrive at our breakfast session straight from a night sleeping out and may be cold, tired, stressed or upset. A warm welcome and somewhere safe to sit and enjoy some food, a shower and a friendly chat can really make the difference to someone’s day. It is also a great opportunity to tell our guests about all the other help they can get from us later in the day.

Rough Sleeper Support Session Volunteer 08:45am - 12:30pm

The rough sleeper support session is where life-changing work can really start. As well as enjoying a shower, fresh clothes and something to eat and drink, guests can sit down with an engagement worker to discuss their situation. Our engagement workers will assess each person as an individual and, in partnership with each guest, can then take action such as making accommodation referrals, helping sort out benefits, or making health-care referrals. The engagement team can only do this work because volunteers are there to look after our guests and keep the centre running smoothly.

Digital Skills Session Volunteer Tuesday 01:00pm - 02:45pm

The digital skills session is an important part of the week where our service users can get access to the internet, learn digital skills and do personal admin tasks such as updating their universal credit account. This encourages independence in our service users and teaches them key life skills and even some employability skills.
