When Bryan* joined Barnabus' resettlement programme after leaving prison, he faced an uncertain future. For many people that leave prison with little money and no family, they will most likely become immediately homeless.

He initially moved into private rented shared accommodation, but the poor living conditions made it difficult for him to move forward.

Recognising he needed more support, Bryan moved into one of Barnabus' supported accommodation projects. With a safe place to live and consistent guidance, he began addressing unresolved trauma and personal challenges while rebuilding his confidence.

As he grew in confidence, Bryan started volunteering with a local charity, progressing from helping in the kitchen, to working on reception. He also completed courses in reading and writing, as well as a Level 2 qualification in Health and Social Care.

In December 2025, Bryan moved into his own home. Since then, he has secured a 20-hour part-time role with the same organisation where he volunteered and now enjoys supporting others who are facing challenges similar to those he once experienced.

During a recent conversation with our housing team, Bryan reflected on the weekly group sessions he attended while living in Barnabus' supported accommodation. He spoke about how learning about accountability, healthy boundaries and empathy gave him practical tools that continue to shape his life today.

Bryan now shares those same lessons with the people he supports in his own role, helping others navigate their own journeys towards stability and independence.

Bryan's story is a powerful reminder that the everyday support we provide can have a lasting impact. A single conversation, group session or word of encouragement can stay with someone long after they leave Barnabus. Bryan continues to share the support that Barnabus provided by helping others who are facing the same hardships he once was.

Your support helps make stories like Bryan's possible, giving people the opportunity not just to rebuild their own lives, but to go on and make a difference in the lives of others.
