FROM TENT TO TENANCY When Toby* first came to Barnabus, he was living in a tent. Months spent out in the cold, uncertain where the next day would take him. A Fresh Start After working with us for a few months Toby was offered the chance to became one of the very first residents in our Supported Accommodation Programme. During his time with us, Toby focused on improving his mental health. He began volunteering with a local charity, where he could find a sense of purpose, learn new skills and meet new people. For two years, he volunteered there happily, discovering a purpose and stability. During this time Toby became our first resident to “graduate” from our Supported Accommodation into his very own tenancy. It was a moment of immense pride — not just for Toby, but for everyone who helped him on his journey. Growing Independence Once he settled into his new flat, Toby needed us less and less — which is exactly what we hoped for. He began to build his own support network and reconnected with his son. At Barnabus independence doesn’t mean goodbye. We want people to know they can come back at any time. No one ever loses the right to support. When Life Changes Course Recently, after a disagreement Toby lost his volunteering role. It was a difficult moment but rather than retreating, he reached out to us for help. Not for housing or financial advice, but for his mental wellbeing. He had already secured Universal Credit, so he wasn’t at risk of homelessness. What he needed most was reassurance and support to stay steady. We were so proud of Toby’s self-awareness. Recognising when you need help and asking for it takes courage. Together, we found new volunteering opportunities for him, helping him stay connected and active. We also invited him to volunteer with Barnabus one day a week. A New Companion Around this time, one of the people we were supporting had a cat that needed a new home. Our housing team thought of Toby straight away. When they suggested he might adopt the cat, he said yes. A few weeks later, the cat moved in. It didn’t take long before it became the centre of Toby’s world. More than just company, the cat gives him purpose, something, to look after and to bring him company on difficult days. Hope Continues Toby’s story reminds us that recovery is not a straight line. Life will always bring challenges. Sometimes, all it takes is a listening ear and in Toby’s case a furry friend. You Can Help Someone Like Toby Today Your kindness can give another person the same chance Toby had and hope for a brighter future. If you can please support Barnabus so that more people like Toby can move off the streets and find new hope and new homes.
