What happens when vulnerability is missed: Terry’s story Terry* arrived at Barnabus two years ago while sleeping rough and living with the effects of a serious brain injury that had never been properly recognised or supported. His confusion, memory loss, emotional distress and difficulty maintaining safe relationships were not simply behaviours; they were symptoms of a condition that left him extremely vulnerable to exploitation and isolation. As his mental and physical health deteriorated, Terry was struggling to survive each day without the specialist support he needed. Barnabus staff quickly realised how serious the situation had become and began advocating for the right accommodation and care. After weeks of safeguarding meetings and assessments, Terry was finally given a safe place to stay , a turning point that changed everything. With stability and ongoing support, Terry was able to reconnect with healthcare services and begin rebuilding his life. He learned how to manage his finances, stabilise his benefits and improve his wellbeing. Today, he has saved £1,000 towards furnishing his future home, something that once felt impossible. Recovery has not been straightforward. There have been setbacks and difficult moments along the way. But slowly, Terry began finding hope again. He rediscovered his faith, started attending Bible study, began going to the gym and has recently been baptised, a moment that symbolised renewal and a fresh start. The transformation in Terry has been remarkable. The man who once wandered the streets frightened and vulnerable is now calm and full of purpose. He is preparing to move into his own supported flat, designed around his needs and future independence. Terry’s story is proof that long-term support, patience and compassion can change lives. Barnabus will continue walking alongside him as he steps into this next chapter. Not just surviving, but truly living.
