Dragon Boat Race, Sale Water Park, Saturday 12th September 2026

Join us at this brilliant Manchester Dragon Boat Festival event and support the work of Barnabus. Change the lives of people experiencing homelessness at this fun-filled, adrenaline pumping, water sports event.

Each Dragon Boat takes up to 17 people; 16 rowers and one drummer. No previous experience is necessary as all training will be given on the day. Each team will have a minimum of three timed races where your single fastest time only will count for Grand Final qualification

The Grand Final will be a race to the finish where all the dragon boats that can be safely raced together will race one last time and the first team across the line will be declared: Dragon Boat Champions of Manchester.

The team entry fee is £650.00 per team, for a team of 17 that's equates to just £38 per person.

Barnabus does not receive any of the money from the boat entry cost. Our work is supported through team sponsorship.

We really hope you will join in the fun to help people experiencing homelessness move off the streets and into a home for good. Our team of Barnabus staff will be there to cheer you on and support you on the day and some of us will also be taking to the water to take part in the race along with you and other participants.

A journey from uncertainty to stability

We first met Lily and Peter several years ago after they were granted refugee status. While this was a major step forward, it also brought sudden instability. As they were no longer eligible to remain in Home Office accommodation, they quickly found themselves facing homelessness, unsure where they would sleep from one night to the next.

What happens when vulnerability is missed: Terry’s story

Terry* arrived at Barnabus two years ago while sleeping rough and living with the effects of a serious brain injury that had never been properly recognised or supported. His confusion, memory loss, emotional distress and difficulty maintaining safe relationships were not simply behaviours; they were symptoms of a condition that left him extremely vulnerable to exploitation and isolation.

Volunteer with us

Our wonderful volunteers are the heart of what we do and without them, we couldn’t do the work we do to get people housed. We have volunteers from all over Greater Manchester, as well as Cheshire and Lancashire, all age groups and all walks of life.

I'M HOMELESS AND I NEED HELP

Barnabus helps adults who are homeless – whether you’re living on the streets, in temporary accommodation or at risk of homelessness. If you have a family with dependents under the age of 18 or are under 18 yourself, we recommend that you contact your local authority immediately.
Homelessness in Manchester

If you’ve walked the streets of Manchester, you’ve almost certainly passed by a rough sleeper. In fact, you’ve probably noticed that there are more people living and sleeping out on the streets. In 2010, the official rough sleeper figure was 7. In 2018, it was 94. Unfortunately, we know that in reality, the number is much higher. Please read on to find out more about homelessness in our city.
